Designing a Space for a Single Dad and His High-School Age Son

Media sales executive, former actor and current band manager’s home for him and his teenage son.

The homeowner had purchased a custom spec home from a builder, and added to the home with a beautiful cabana and pool in the backyard.

Pool and Cabana area BEFORE and AFTER

Goal: Party House

This timbered cabana and outdoor fireplace were beautiful – but they did have some shortcomings. We added a seating area in an all-weather wicker with traditional silhouettes to give the space some adult gravitas. The adult feel gets another boost from custom drapery panels; these working panels can be drawn to create a summer romantic space or be pulled back for a family pool party.

Master Bedroom BEFORE and AFTER

This is one of my favorite transformations. Not expensive, not extreme, and fits the homeowner’s style.

Firstly, we painted the room a darker hue to make it feel more intimate, and less ‘apartment’.

Next, we repositioned the art to take advantage of the high ceilings and spaciousness. Reading lights were included to make the bed work better for the late night reader. The bed feels more grown-up and masculine due to the deep hues and textures in the  Peacock Alley bedding.

Study BEFORE and AFTER

The study in this home is in a cozy space with light entering on three exposures. Originally, a collection of memorabilia from music icons were hung as acquired filling the space. We rehung this collection into easily viewed groups and added lighting that was more fitting for reading. We framed those sunny windows with lined silk drapery in a grillwork pattern: masculine and interesting.
